However, in some cases, it is more efficient to conduct the bed survey with drones: <\/p><ul><li>when the water is inaccessible to a vessel, or too dangerous<\/li><li>for smaller streams<\/li><li>projects with a limited surface area<\/li><li>shallow waters where a boat cannot be used or is difficult to operate<\/li><\/ul><p>Additionally, the cost of a drone is generally lower than that of a vessel for performing the surveys.<\/p><p>When performing bathymetric surveys with drones, there are several important factors to consider.<\/p><p>For instance, the drone must remain at a fixed height, making a terrain-following function a requirement. Data shows that a GPS signal alone is not reliable for this, and RTK or, preferably, PPK is required. Otherwise, the drone turns into a submarine.  <\/p><p>In addition, we must always take into account the relevant geoid models, reference heights, the distance between the RTK antenna and the echosounder, potential currents, and other factors relevant to the drone flights.<\/p><p>Based on these and other parameters, we can use software to plan a drone flight for the survey so that it proceeds automatically.<\/p><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-1664\" src=\"https:\/\/topo4d.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/bathymetrie-768x421-1-300x164.avif\" alt=\"\" width=\"500\" height=\"274\" srcset=\"https:\/\/topo4d.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/bathymetrie-768x421-1-300x164.avif 300w, https:\/\/topo4d.be\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/12\/bathymetrie-768x421-1.avif 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/p><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid vc_custom_1544176363530 mkdf-row-light-btt-skin\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div id=\"attachment_9259\"><p id=\"caption-attachment-9259\"><em>bathymetry with drones<\/em><\/p><\/div><p>The measurable depths depend on the payload\u2014specifically the type of echosounder used under the drone. On average, the range is between 1 and 200 meters, depending on the acoustic frequency. <\/p><h5>Factors:<\/h5><p>During execution, several factors must be taken into account:<\/p><ul><li>Water currents: for this, we can use an echosounder with a tilt meter that automatically compensates for the current in the water, and\/or the survey can be conducted in a zigzag grid.<\/li><li>wind and water speed: the permitted speed differences between the water and the wind are limited.<\/li><\/ul><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div class=\"vc_row wpb_row vc_row-fluid mkdf-row-light-btt-skin\"><div class=\"wpb_column vc_column_container vc_col-sm-12\"><div class=\"vc_column-inner\"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><div class=\"wpb_text_column wpb_content_element \"><div class=\"wpb_wrapper\"><h2>Technical execution<\/h2><p>For the processing of the survey, we need to use various software packages.<\/p><p>To do this, we must first export the recorded data from the device and import it into the software.<\/p><p>This can be imported in CSV, NMEA, or SEG-Y data formats.<\/p><p>Following a brief workflow, this data can be processed into elevation maps.
