Drone to BIM: from aerial data to BIM models

Drone to BIM is a method in which drone surveys are used to convert existing buildings and sites into usable BIM models. By combining aerial data with photogrammetry and laser scanning, an accurate digital representation of the as-built condition is created. This approach is increasingly used for renovations, extensions, and complex sites where current plans are missing or incomplete.

How does Drone to BIM work?

Drone to BIM combines various measurement methods:

  • Drone surveys for capturing roofs, facades, and surroundings
  • Photogrammetry to convert images into measurable 3D data
  • 3D laser scanning for extra detail and accuracy where necessary

The collected data is processed into a point cloud, which then serves as the basis for creating a BIM model in the desired LOD (Level of Development).

As an example project, a Drone to BIM process was carried out for the Dendermonde hospital. Using drone surveys and additional laser scanning, an LOD 300 BIM model was constructed.

This model served as:

  • a basis for future management and maintenance

The project demonstrates how Drone to BIM can be deployed for large and complex buildings where precision is crucial.

When is Drone to BIM suitable?

Drone to BIM is particularly suitable for:

  • campuses and large sites

For underground or water-related structures, this method is less suitable, and other measurement techniques are preferred.
