Volume Determinations
For the correct determination of the number of cubic meters (m³) in earthworks, raising, excavation, or leveling, an accurate volume measurement is essential. TOPO4D performs volume determinations with professional surveying equipment and advanced technology, tailored to your project.
During the survey, a three-dimensional model of the terrain or the stockpile is created. Based on this, we generate a digital terrain model (DTM), with which volumes can be calculated exactly and terrain profiles can be created.
In the event of changes to the terrain, we compare different 3D models with each other. This allows us to calculate the exact difference in volume, for example for cut-and-fill calculations or cost estimates for earthworks.
What are volume determinations used for?
Volume measurements are used for, among other things:
- Determination of stocks at the end of a fiscal quarter
- Planning of transport for the removal or supply of soil
- Calculation of cut-and-fill volumes
- Extraction works and mining
- Determination of raw material prices based on exact volumes
- Monitoring of soil depots and bulk goods

Which measurement methods do we use?
Depending on the situation, we apply the most suitable method:
- GNSS measurements
- Total station
- 3D Laser Scanning
- Drone Surveys
For larger terrains or difficult-to-access zones, we often work with drone surveys.
For complex structures or indoor spaces, 3D laser scanning may be the best solution.
In specific cases, we combine this with photogrammetry to quickly map large areas.
For water bodies or dredging works, volume determination can also be combined with bathymetric measurements, so that measurements are taken correctly both above and below the water surface.
